What this site collects

Messages you send.The contact form asks for your name, a phone number or email, what you are interested in, and your message, and it records the page you sent it from. The message is stored in Google Firebase in Ian's own account and emailed to Ian. If that connection is ever unavailable, the form sends the message through FormSubmit, a mail relay, instead.

Visit statistics.Google Analytics records the pages you visit, roughly where you are (from your network address), and your device and browser, using cookies and identifiers Google sets. Ian's own visit counter records visits, the site that referred you, whether you are on a phone or a computer, and taps on the phone and email links. It sets no cookies.

Videos. Listing films are embedded from YouTube in its privacy enhanced mode, which still connects to Google when you press play.

Address lookups. When you look up an address on the map, the address or the point is sent to the public map services that answer the lookup (FEMA, CAL FIRE, the California Geological Survey, the Coastal Commission, Los Angeles and Orange County, and city GIS services) so they can return their results. Ian does not keep a list of the addresses you look up. A shared report link carries the address in its web address, and the visit statistics record page addresses.

Map tiles.The map's base layer comes from OpenFreeMap, so your network address reaches its servers as the tiles load.

How it is used

Messages are used to answer you. Visit statistics are used to see how the site is used. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anyone for their own marketing.

Who else receives it

Google (Firebase, Analytics and YouTube), FormSubmit when it carries a message, Agent OS (the visit counter), OpenFreeMap, and the government map services named above. Each handles data under its own terms.

Your choices

You can read the site without sending anything. Browser settings and blockers stop the analytics and the visit counter. This site does not change its behavior in response to Do Not Track signals. To see or delete a message you sent, write to the address below.

Changes are posted on this page with a new effective date.
