The Rancho Palos Verdes Coast, Landmark by Landmark

Drive Palos Verdes Drive West and then South from Palos Verdes Estates to San Pedro and you pass the landmarks that define the Rancho Palos Verdes coast one after another. They are the reason people pay for the south side of the hill, and each one sits in a different MLS area with its own character. Here they are in order, with the areas they belong to on the map.
Point Vicente Lighthouse and the Interpretive Center
The lighthouse at Point Vicente has stood on its bluff since 1926 and is still a working light. Next to it, the city's Point Vicente Interpretive Center and the park around it are the hill's whale watching spot in winter, with a bluff trail that runs toward Terranea. The homes above it are in MLS area 170, West Palos Verdes, which faces the sunset.
Terranea Resort
Terranea opened in 2009 on the 102 acre headland that was Marineland of the Pacific until 1987. It is the only resort on the Peninsula, and its restaurants, spa and public coastal trail are part of daily life for the neighborhoods around it. For a buyer it also means something practical: the stretch of coast between the lighthouse and Abalone Cove is built out and stable, with no large parcels left.
Abalone Cove and Portuguese Bend
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is about 79 acres of bluff, beach and tide pools run by the city. East of it is Portuguese Bend, the famous landslide area, where the road moves and the homes on the slope are on private wells and septic systems. The glass Wayfarers Chapel above it closed in 2024 because of the land movement and was taken apart for a future rebuild. This is MLS area 169, Palos Verdes Drive South, and it is the one part of the hill where the geology report is the first thing I read, not the last.

Trump National Golf Club
Trump National is a public course on the bluffs at the east end of the Bend, with a public trail along the ocean side. The Estates at Trump National is the gated enclave of about 75 homes beside it, and my land listing at 3239 Palos Verdes Drive South, 1.3 acres with approved plans above the course, sold in 2026.
Ladera Linda and White Point
Ladera Linda Park, on Forrestal Drive above the Bend, is the city's park and community center for the south side, rebuilt and reopened in 2023, with trails that drop into the preserve. Past the city line in San Pedro, White Point is a Los Angeles County beach with a 95 acre nature preserve on the bluff above it and the old Royal Palms beach below. The homes above it sit in MLS area 179, South Shores, which belongs to San Pedro on paper but shares the Peninsula's coast and views.
Questions People Ask
Is Terranea open to the public?
Yes. The resort's restaurants, shops and the public coastal trail along its bluff are open to anyone. The resort opened in 2009 on the former Marineland site.
Is Wayfarers Chapel still open?
No. The chapel closed in 2024 because of the land movement in Portuguese Bend and was dismantled so it can be rebuilt on stable ground.
Which MLS areas cover the Rancho Palos Verdes coast?
170 West Palos Verdes around the lighthouse and Terranea, 169 Palos Verdes Drive South from Abalone Cove through Portuguese Bend to Trump National, and 179 South Shores above White Point.
